When planning your family holiday in Mallorca, you may wish to visit one of the many majestic monasteries on Mallorca that can be found throughout the island.
There are over thirty monasteries on Mallorca, many of which can be found in the rural regions or on top of hills in the Tramuntana mountains. From most of these sites, you can enjoy not only a glimpse into the religious history of the island, but also some of the most spectacular scenery. There are a number of prolific monasteries to visit, as well as some lesser-known spots, but you are guaranteed a peaceful and enjoyable visit amongst the beautiful surroundings and historic grounds wherever you choose. Cycling enthusiasts can take part in the “Three Monasteries” route to combine some practice with visits to three of the most famous holy sites on Mallorca, while holidaymakers can otherwise arrive by foot or by car. One monastery that should be on your list is perhaps the island’s best known, Lluc Sanctuary.
Lluc Sanctuary
The remains of this monastery have been transformed into a popular point of pilgrimage, frequented by those in search of peace as well as tourists all year round. The site can be easily accessed if you are renting a holiday villa in Port de Soller, as well as other nearby areas such as Pollensa. The site dates back to the 13th century, and is a beautiful example of local architecture and landscaping. Once you have made the ascent, you can wonder round the monastery to view ancient relics and statues, and look out over the mountains to take in fantastic views of the surrounding vistas.
San Salvador Monastery
If you are renting one of our holiday villas in Felanitx, you are near to what is often considered the second-most holy site on Mallorca behind Lluc Sanctuary. San Salvador also dates back to the 13th century, and is magnificently positioned overlooking Felanitx. It is quite a step ascent, but those who make the trip to the top can visit the Statue of Christ at the summit (510m above sea level), and look out over most of Southwest Mallorca from the top of the hill.
Santuari del Puig de Maria
The oldest monastery in Mallorca, the “Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Puig” lies on top of the Puig de Maria hill, just outside of Pollensa. If you are renting one of our luxury holiday villas here, this small yet beautifully preserved monastery is worth a visit. There is a small chapel and again, phenomenal views to be admired, along with a restaurant for some light refreshment. It’s worth noting you can only go so far by car, so this particular monastery is best enjoyed on foot.
