Bays of Mallorca

There are wild natural bays, sandy bays that are like perfect film sets, and bays with backdrops of sheer cliffs and villages sitting on the mountain sides.

They are not all small, some of them like Palma Bay are large and have a huge array of shops, cafes and bars. Many yachts moor here and boat trips are readily available as an excursion from the port.

On the north of the island there are the two large bays of Puerto Pollenca and Alcudia. They both have plenty of stop off points with lovely sights, and are popular with tourists and residents. Either of them makes for a great day out, particularly with children, as their beaches are sandy and safe. This area of the island is very popular with water sports fans, which even if you are not taking part, can be fun to watch.

A little way along the coast from Alcudia is the unspoilt, charming bay of Colonia Sant Pedro – a small fishing village with just one hotel but six restaurants. The beach is safe and provides the perfect place if you are looking for somewhere quiet.

On the east coast there are numerous small bays, many of them only accessible by foot or boat. Cala Mondrago is a national park and like many of the other bays along this coast, is tree lined and very pretty. Cala Murada and Calas de Mallorca are favourites amongst tourists.

The bay of Cala Agulla has a white sand beach, disabled access, showers, toilets, lifeguards, and food available. It feels a very natural beach because of the large pine forest bordering the bay, but offers a full range of water sports and activities.

Cala D’Or is made up of five small bays, which has a mini road train that runs between them all. This is an area that will suit everyone’s needs, quiet and relaxing if you want it to be, but plenty for families and groups to do as well. It was one of the first major tourist areas on Mallorca and it does not matter if you want to play golf, go fishing or sailing, or perhaps try your hand at scuba diving, Cala d’Or offers them all and more.

The bay of Sa Colobra is not the easiest to get to by road, but it is definitely worth the effort. You have to follow a narrow and steep road with hairpin turns, and you may be better giving it a miss if you’re not a confident driver. You can get to the beach by boat, which for the fainthearted is a much better prospect.
