The small north-east Mallorcan town of Muro sits on a hillside and has a lovely collection of traditional Majorcan stone houses which attract many holiday makers in search of a rented apartment, villa, townhouse or rural finca in the locality.
Muro is a pretty, sleepy little town and a highly popular choice for people who come to Mallorca looking to rent holiday accommodation here.
The first thing you notice when you get near to your Muro holiday property is the preponderance of traditional Mallorcan windmills. The flat, local landscape around Muro is liberally dotted with them.
Venture just a couple of miles north of Muro and you’ll come across a low-lying wetland area known as Mallorca’s vegetable basket. Dominated by windmills (it’s called locally “the land of a thousand windmills”). Not surprisingly, there is a weekly food market held every Sunday in the old town.
The heart of Muro is undoubtedly the town’s main square, Placa Constitucio. It’s an interesting place featuring a variety of architectural styles, a light and airy ambiance and all dominated by the Gothic church of St Joan Baptista. Sometimes you are permitted to climb to the very top of the belfry of this Muro landmark and take in the views, which are truly spectacular.
A big attraction in Muro is the Museu Etnologic. Housed in a rambling old former Muro mansion, the museum features a variety of old artefacts relevant to the town’s long history – pottery, old farm implements, traditional costumes, Mallorcan bagpipes and so on.
Look out for the miniature ceramics called siurells, painted green, red and white. Once given as presents by Mallorcans, they actually work as whistles and have now become something of a tourist souvenir.
Muro casts off its sleepy reputation and really comes to life during the Revetlla de Sant Antoni Abat every January. This is Muro’s traditional and popular fiesta where local people congregate around bonfires to eat, drink and dance. The ancient music and traditional Majorcan dances transport you back to a bygone age.
With family holiday accommodation in Muro you not only enjoy all the cultural benefits of the old town, Muro’s tourist beach resort, the Playa de Muro is just a few miles away. Crystal clear waters and lovely sandy beaches await.
Muro enjoys a direct connection by major road to the capital Palma and its international airport. It is also on the Mallorcan train network, with fast convenient services taking you to Inca and Palma.
So whether you’re looking to rent a fabulous holiday villa for family and friends, or a lovely old townhouse for a well-earned romantic break, we at Balearic Villas would be happy to help you find your dream rental property in the Muro area.
After all, with years of experience, vast local knowledge and a wide range of luxury holiday villas, townhouses and apartments available to rent, we are better placed than most to ensure you enjoy the holiday of a lifetime.
