If you are looking for things to do whilst staying in a holiday villa in Palma, add a visit to the Es Baluard Contemporary Art Museum to the list.
Housed in a former military fortress, this museum has been open to the public for over a decade, showcasing the finest contemporary art created by renowned painters and artists. The museum is situated on the outskirts of Palma, and is easily accessible via hire car or public transit. Once there, you can spend an entire day roaming numerous exhibitions and contemporary collections, and admiring some of the finest art found on Mallorca.
Es Baluard can be found in what was formerly the Baluard de Sant Pere, a military fortress used to defend the island’s capital city. Today, the structure has been nothing short of transformed, now housing a number of classic paintings and artworks from around the world. The building itself dates back to the 16th century, and the works found inside range from those created by well-known artists to more recent, emerging talents. Fans of Picasso, Cezanne and Gauguin (to name a few) can explore some of their works on display here. There is a wide range of art created by Mallorcan artists on exhibition here as well.
There is plenty of space indoors to enjoy the many collections, but contemporary outdoor spaces and courtyards are often the scene of pop-up, temporary exhibits. There collections are changed frequently, so no matter if it’s your first or fifth time visiting, you’re bound to see some new and exciting contemporary art. There are many buses, both local and tourist routes, that provide easy access to this top attraction. Once you have finished admiring the art, head out on to one of the surrounding walls to take in the city skyline from one of the most unique vantage points in Palma.
