From mulled wine to turrón, Mallorca’s Christmas markets offer a charming festive atmosphere, despite the island’s mild temperatures.
During the Christmas season, Palma dresses up and is illuminated with decorations that evoke the magic of the holiday season. Christmas markets are flourishing on the island, with new offers each year that attract both locals and tourists. This is the perfect opportunity to taste Mallorcan Christmas delights, with a wide variety of flavours and traditional sweets. In addition to turrón, the star of the festivities, you’ll find almonds in various forms, crumbly polvorones that melt in your mouth, crespells (traditional Christmas biscuits), and neules, delicate wafers resembling snowflakes. You can also sample coca de patata (a potato bun scented with anise) and gingerbread, a fusion of German and Mallorcan traditions. And, of course, there’s mulled wine, a Christmas staple. If you haven’t finished your Christmas shopping, you’re sure to find something special at these markets while soaking in the festive atmosphere.
Where are the Christmas markets?
On the 19th of November at 7:30 p.m., Palma’s city centre will light up with beautiful festive decorations, marking the start of the Christmas season. To secure a good spot and not miss the spectacle, it’s recommended to be at Paseo del Borne before 5:00 p.m.
Palma’s Christmas markets officially open on the 25th of November, coinciding with Black Friday, which also draws many visitors thanks to the great deals in shops. The wooden stalls set up in Plaça d’Espanya, Plaça Mayor, Las Ramblas, Plaça Porta Pintada, and Via Roma will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., offering everything from nativity scene figurines to handmade crafts such as jewellery, ceramics, and candles. The festive lights in the centre of Palma will remain until early January, and the Christmas markets will continue until the 6th of January, when the Three Wise Men parade through the city streets.
Puerto Portals and its international charm
One of the most iconic Christmas markets in Mallorca is the “Christmas Market” in Puerto Portals. This market has established itself as a popular meeting point for residents who spend the winter on the island. The wooden stalls, set against the backdrop of glistening yachts, offer a combination of Christmas treats from around the world, from German gingerbread to Italian and Asian delicacies, as well as a varied selection of gifts for all tastes. This market will be open from the 17th of December to the 7th of January, from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., extending its hours to 10:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Christmas at Pueblo Español
Another market worth noting is the one held at Pueblo Español in Palma. This site, with its architecture featuring replicas of Spain’s most iconic buildings, creates a particularly cosy and festive atmosphere. In addition to high-quality crafts and Christmas decorations, the market stands out as a meeting place where families gather to enjoy local cuisine and share in the Christmas spirit. Inselradio, the famous German radio station, is always present, offering mulled wine. This market will be open from the 1st to the 11th of December, with an entrance fee of €10 for adults, €2 for children aged 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. The opening hours are from 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Christmas spirit in the villages of Mallorca
The island’s villages also join in the Christmas spirit with their own Firàs de Nadal, which often have a special charm. These fairs become gathering points where locals enjoy mulled wine, turrón, and local activities. Some of the most popular Christmas markets in the villages are:
- Santa Ponça: On the 4th of December, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., at C/Riu Sil.
- Monastery of Lluc: On the 3rd and 4th of December, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Esporles: On the 3rd and 4th of December, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Placeta del Jardinet, with activities throughout the day.
- Binissalem: On the 3rd and 4th of December in Plaza de la Iglesia. Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with the lights switch-on at 6:30 p.m., and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Calvià Vila: On the 6th of December, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Carrer Major.
There will also be Christmas markets in villages such as Petra, Palmanova, Muro, and many more, each with its own magic and traditions. These events are perfect for enjoying the Christmas atmosphere in more peaceful, local settings, ideal for families and those seeking an authentic experience.
