The Most Iconic Festivity of Mallorca in Honor of Summer
The “Noche de Sant Joan” is one of the most important festivals celebrated in Mallorca, especially in Palma. The city fills with noise, torches, and dimonis (demons) weaving through the Parc de la Mar, below the Cathedral, covering the air with sparks, fire, and the smell of gunpowder. You must have a bandana to protect your mouth and head! For someone not from Mallorca, all this sounds apocalyptic, but on the island, it’s one of the most traditional and curious parties not to be missed, even if the devil himself shows up.
The Festival Atmosphere
Around this festival, crowds gather in Parc de la Mar, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the dimonis, who appear out of nowhere between the park’s viaducts, making a grand entrance amid fire and acrobatics to the rhythm of a batucada, echoing throughout the place with sounds emulating the underworld. In the Correfoc, the specific performance of this show, the dimonis run through the park while people choose to either hide or join them and dance around as the drums play. At that moment, many bonfires are also lit throughout the park, creating a truly special atmosphere.
The Beach Tradition
Around 11 o’clock, the dimonis have gathered, and the crowds that previously fled or danced with them move down to the nearest beach, where they light bonfires. Just around midnight, when the summer solstice is fully underway, they jump into the water to make a wish come true.
Sant Joan across Mallorca
Sant Joan is celebrated throughout the island, and although Palma and Playa de Palma are the busiest and most impressive places, it is also celebrated with less fanfare in other parts. The modus operandi is the same: friends and families go to beaches and coves and organize a candlelit dinner. At barbecues, adults cook delicacies while children play. Music, food, and drink make this a special night, which brings with it the long-awaited season. As soon as the clock strikes midnight, people go into the water with hope in their minds, of course, of what they wish for. As the legend goes, for the wish to come true, you must jump backward into the water with a lit candle in hand.
A Must-Experience Festival
It’s one of those traditional festivals that you must experience in life. And you can’t forget that you’ll have to dress appropriately for the occasion, not just for being on the beach. It’s also about fire and sparks! And the smell of smoke doesn’t go away immediately.
