Indeed Palma is a fabulous place for wandering casually around the narrow streets and alleyways of the old town, stopping here and there for a spot of people watching while sipping an ice-cold beer.

The main attraction of Palma is undoubtedly La Seu, Palma’s magnificent Gothic cathedral. Viewed from the adjacent Parc de la Mar, it totally dominates the skyline, making Palma famous for having one of the most stunning waterfronts in the world.

The architecture in Palma is breathtaking. Medieval stone palaces contrast with Modernist buildings such as Palma’s Gran Hotel. You don’t have to look hard to spot the quirky architecture of Gaudi. And some of the city’s penthouse conversions position Palma Mallorca as one of the coolest cities in the world in which to enjoy a holiday.

As you can imagine, Palma is a bit of a foodies’ paradise and has a choice of fine restaurants. Whether it’s a traditional Spanish recipe such as paella, a tasty Mallorcan dish like Frito Mallorcan, or contemporary fusion cuisine or gourmet burgers, you’re never short of a top restaurant in this lovely city.

The Cathedral – the main attraction of the old town is undoubtedly Palma’s magnificent Gothic cathedral. La Seu has dominated Palma’s skyline and waterfront ever since building began in 1230 AD.

Placa Cort – a traditional square definitely worth a visit, lying as it does in the heart of Palma old town. Here you’ll find the impressive Palma Town Hall where government ceremonies often take place. It’s a place teeming with life like a good Majorcan square should be.

Placa Major – a large central pedestrianized square elevated high up above the roadway. Plenty of pavement cafes, craft fairs and street theatre.

Arab Baths – Mallorca was for many centuries a Moorish stronghold as is exemplified by these ancient baths. There is a pleasant garden outside too, with tables provided for a picnic in the sunshine.

Museu Diocesa – part of the old bishop’s palace, the Diocesan Museum is in a pretty courtyard at the back of the cathedral. Includes the city’s largest collection of Mallorcan Primitive Art.

Palau March – located just by the cathedral in the one-time home of Mallorca’s most powerful citizen, Joan March.

Parc de la Mar – a lovely, spacious park overlooking the sea on one side and the cathedral on the other. There’s a lake in the middle and many of Palma’s leisure events are held here.

Avinguda Jaume III – Palma’s ‘posh’ shopping thoroughfare with all the big name designer shops you could name. There’s a branch of the El Corte Ingles department store too.

Paseo Born – leading off Jaime III, a beautiful tree-lined wide boulevard with a central walkway where you can stroll and stop for some refreshments. A splendid fountain greets you at the end.

El Corte Ingles – an upmarket department store that could give Harrods a run for its money. Pleasant, multilingual staff to help with your shopping therapy.

Café Cappuccino – one of the most elegant places in the whole of Palma to enjoy a quiet drink or snack. Formerly a palace in Carrer Sant Miquel, the shaded courtyard at the back is a great place to unwind after a day exploring.

Paseo Maritimo – Palma’s stunning seafront boulevard. Long and wide, you’ll find some great shops, fabulous restaurants and more millionaire yachts than you could shake a stick at.

Es Baluard – within the city’s medieval city walls, this splendid modern art gallery is a lovely place to spend a quiet afternoon. Look out for some masterpieces by Picasso and Joan Miro.

Fundacio Pilar i Joan Miro – just on the outskirts of town, a special museum and art gallery dedicated to the artist Joan Miro who had his studio here
