Excellent Golf Courses in Mallorca

Mallorca’s mild winters, limited amount of rain and stunning scenery definitely adding to the attraction of el golf.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a keen golfer with an impressive handicap, or just fancy having a go on the greens. You will always be made to feel welcome and usually don’t need to be a member.

Impressively, 11 of Majorca’s golf courses are of official standard and most of the rest are 18-hole. If you are a seasoned golfer, you will appreciate the par 70 golf course at Pula in the north east of the island. Generally regarded as Mallorca’s most challenging course, Pula is used on the International Pro Tour as well as hosting many celebrity tournaments.

Luxury villas close to a golf course and all local amenities are popular on the island. They are often located on or next to courses such as Real Golf de Bendinat, which is also close to several fine sandy beaches. There are also many local spas to help you unwind tired muscles after a hard day on the golf course.

Another championship course is Puntiro Golf Park. Situated in the north of the island, the Par 71 course was designed by Jack Nicolaus’ company. Challenging in places, Puntiro tends to attract low to medium handicaps.

One of the more refined courses in Majorca is the Son Gual Golf Club near the capital, Palma. Although a private, family-owned destination, guests who adhere to the club’s standards of etiquette are more than welcome. Large greens, beautiful views and an elegant club house are major attractions.

For scenery, you really are spoilt for choice at Alcanda Golf Club near Alcudia in the north of Mallorca. Here you can enjoy lovely vistas of the Bay of Alcudia and the breathtaking Tramuntana mountains.

If sea views particularly appeal, you would be hard pressed to beat Val d’or Golf Club near Cala d’Or on Mallorca’s east coast. At par 71, this 18-hole course is classed as one with ‘average difficulty’.

Andratx on Mallorca’s east coast is deservedly one of the island’s most sought after courses. And the golf’s pretty good too – Andratx Golf Club being designed by the world-famous Gleneagles Scotland.

Of course, not everyone has an impressively low handicap, so it’s good to know there are many golf courses in Mallorca for the enthusiast rather than the virtuoso. An example is Santa Ponsa Golf Club in the south west. It comprises a sizeable three-course golf complex (one open to the public) and is widely viewed as Mallorca’s most popular golf course. The adjacent Santa Ponsa Country Club is also something not to be missed.

Yet another popular golf course in the Santa Ponsa area is Poniente Golf Club. This is regarded as a genuinely fun course to play on. Suitable for mixed ability groups, the golf course has more of an informal appeal and receives rave reviews from visitors.

Back up to the north of the island lies Pollenca Golf Club, a course enjoying a most spectacular location. This 9-hole facility is ideal for all players and offers spectacular views across the bay. Lying just 10 kilometres north of Palma, Mallorca’s capital city, you will find the 18-hole Par 71 Son Termens Golf Club. If you really want a relaxing (yet challenging) game of golf, this is the place to be. It’s much quieter than many of Mallorca’s golf clubs and the scenery is superb.

Another quiet and peaceful golf course is Son Antem situated to the east of Palma. The two 18-hole golf courses here are popular with both holidaymakers and seasoned pros alike.

Finally, if watching golf as a spectator sport is your preference, Mallorca has plenty to offer. A number of prestigious golf competitions are held here on the island. Examples include the Balearic Islands Trophy, the Challenge HRH Count of Barcelona, the Spanish Professional Championship and many more.

All in all, it’s not an exaggeration to say that Mallorca really is a golfer’s paradise.
